Working On
Jobs for young people in recovery from substance abuse
Working On is a program conducted by Mercy Family Services and
the
Brisbane City Council. It helps prepare young people
aged 17 to 35 in recovery from substance abuse, for paid
employment. It encourages public and private sector organisations to offer traineeships, apprenticeships or other
employment opportunities to these young people to help them
maintain their rehabilitation.
Who is eligible?
Applicants between 17 and 35 who are:
-
in recovery from substance abuse
-
willing to participate in an ongoing counselling relationship
-
not in full-time permanent work
and whose recovery will be enhanced through
employment.
How does the program work?
To ensure the young person has a smooth transition into the
workplace and the best chance of successfully completing the
program, Working On has three phases.
Phase One: Preparation for work
Successful applicants attend a seven-week work
preparation course delivered by Mercy Family Services. During
the course participants are assessed for job readiness and any
issues are addressed. Every effort is made to match participants
to suitable positions as soon as possible after successful
completion of the course.
Phase Two: Paid work (12 months)
The paid work component is usually traineeships which provide
skills, experience and nationally accredited qualifications in
areas such as horticulture, business administration, animal
care, water treatment, information technology or other areas
depending upon interest and employer support of the program.
Traineeships or other employment opportunities are with Brisbane
City Council, Queensland Government or the private sector. Phase Three: Ongoing Support
Mercy Family Services provides on-the-job support for 12 months
once the young person commences their paid work. Employers and
employees are assisted with workplace issues if they arise.
Employers can also access regular information sessions while
trainees are encouraged to attend quarterly networking sessions.
