Providing safe, supported and supervised placements for young people
The Residential Care program is one form of 'out of home'
care for young people who are unable to live at home because of
child protection concerns. Located in suburban houses in the
community this program provides a structured and therapeutic
environment for young people with complex needs who may have
highly challenging behaviours requiring intensive support during
their placement. Young people are encouraged to achieve their
personal goals, including education, employment, recreation,
positive relationships, like skills and independence.
Family contact is encouraged so that significant linkages can be
maintained. Young people are supported to build on individual
interests and abilities by attending local schools and
participating in local community activities.
The staffing structure in each house consists of a Coordinator
who leads a team of Youth Support Workers, rostered to provide
24 hour support. A Caseworker is responsible for implementing
care plans and providing support to young people and their
families. The Coordinator and Caseworker are supervised by the
Program Manager.
Our programs, based at Goodna, Logan, Zillmere and
Woolloongabba, strives to respond to the particular needs of
Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander children, their families and
communities.
Successful transition to independent living is regarded as an
important aspect of 'out of home' care. In Zillmere and
Toowoomba, we have the Supported Independent Living Program
offering opportunities for young people to make that transition
while continuing to receive support from people whom they
already know.
Referrals
Referrals to the program are made via the liaison officers of
the Chermside and Pine Rivers Child Safety Service Centres,
Department of Child Safety.
Prior to a young person entering the program, a meeting is held
to introduce the young person to staff and to develop a shared
commitment to the placement.
